Formed in the early 80’s, Red Herring first performed at The Waterfront, recording live songs which were released on the Vancouver cassette compilation Undergrowth. Not long after, the band won Shindig (CITR’s Battle of the Bands), which led to their acclaimed studio EP Taste Tests. This they followed up with their award winning one-shot videos for Taste Tests and The Crab Song which were featured on MuchMusic. After a tour of Canada, which they memorialized in their 30 minute song cycle There is no City, they went their separate ways. 

Singer/guitarist Enrico Renz went into teaching and playing improvised music for contact dancers; Stephen Nikleva, besides playing with Sarah McLachlan, also co-produced and played on Veda Hille’s debut release, and worked with singer-songwriters Mae Moore, Sandy Scofield, and Paul Hyde. Stephen also played with The Animal Slaves and has been active in the roots scene with Ray Condo and currently with Petunia & the Vipers. Bassist Martin Walton joined Veda Hille’s band and was a member of The Nohearums, while drummer Steve Lazin played world music with a variety of musicians, joined Renz in exploring stream of consciousness improv, drummed for Sook Yin Lee’s quirky art band, Bob’s Your Uncle, and played with Walton and Nikleva in the Crimpolines and Veda Hille’s band. 

In 2013, they came together again. In an interview with Allan McInnis for his blog Alienated in Vancouver, Renz said, “I get the feeling that we got back together again because we all believe that the best is yet to come. We just had to take a break for a couple of decades to go gather more skills and experiences to throw into the soup.” 

Rounding out the band’s sound these days are singer Tania Gosgnach (Stone Cold Sober) and Id Guinness, who played keyboards on the band’s Taste Tests EP.
